Computer aided engineering

Find technical support in the disciplines of roadway design/drafting software support and design visualization. You will find guidance on installation, operation technical assistance and training for InRoads, MicroStation and ProjectWise.

Resource installations and downloads

Review installation instructions (PDF 155KB) for both MicroStation and InRoads. The WSDOT resources are designed to install in their own folders separate and distinct from the program software or any other resource set.

External WSDOT customers using MicroStation and InRoads with Windows operating systems can follow the Full install download (ZIP 44.8MB).  Find the current resource release notes (PDF 134KB).

Deliverable file formats

Our official drafting and design applications and versions include:

  • Bentley MicroStation V8i SS3 (v8.11.09.xx)
  • Power InRoads V8i SS2 (v8.11.07.xx)

Submit all deliverables in the official version and produce using current CAE resources, unless otherwise stated in a specific WSDOT-Consultant agreement.

OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation Connect implementation

WSDOT CAE is planning to implement in January 2024. CAE is currently working to train the WSDOT HQ and Regional support staff for Right of Way, Traffic, Utilities and Environmental. CAE is also working to update Electronic Data Engineering Standards for the New Connect environment.

WSDOT V8i DGN global origin disclaimer

The current WSDOT V8i DGN Global Origin XY is shifted from the design plane center and may impact 3D referencing to WSDOT 2D or 3D DGN and other CAD platforms. This issue is represented by a reference offset of -2.1475 on each axis (XY for 2D and XYZ for 3D) from the design plane center.

When referencing a WSDOT V8i DGN to another DGN, or when converting a WSDOT V8i DGN to another CAD format, verify the referenced data keeps the original coordinates. Compare the native file coordinates with the reference coordinates for consistency.

Electronic Engineering Data Standards (EEDS) Manual

The Electronic Engineering Data Standards (EEDS) manual defines standards and procedures for preparing, delivering, and archiving electronic engineering data created for the Washington State Department of Transportation during location survey, design, and PS&E phases of highway projects. These standards shall be used in the preparation and delivery of all electronic deliverables defined within, and applies to projects delivered by WSDOT staff and consulting firms, unless otherwise approved by a WSDOT Project Development Engineer.

The purpose of these standards and procedures is to promote uniformity and consistency across WSDOT. Project data can then be effectively managed during the project development phase and has value for those in future phases, such as construction, who need to make use of electronic data that was originally created by someone else.

The instructions in this manual are not intended to preclude the exercise of project manager judgment in the event of special or unique circumstances that would make following these standards less efficient for delivery of a specific project.

EEDS Manual

All forms referenced in section 8 of this manual are available for download and use here. You may need to install the appropriate application(s) to read the available formats.

This manual will be updated on a continuing basis with revisions issued periodically. Suggestions for improvements are welcome, please send suggestions to your local WSDOT CAE Coordinator.

Training

Due to limited staff and resources, CAE must focus on developing training and resources for our future applications - OpenRoads Designer and OpenBridge Modeler.

All of the legacy MicroStation and InRoads training in the table below is well-suited to self study, and the Class Descriptions provide the time required for instructor led training.  Self study may require some additional time.  If students have questions when working through the training, Southwest and Northwest regions may contact their CAE Coordinators.

CAE technical notes are another good resource for learning about specific procedures and tasks. Several tech notes are available in video format that show step-by-step processing in the application.

Training download instructions

Google Chrome is the recommended browser for training downloads. Locate the desired training from the list below and click on the View/Download link. A small dialog will appear showing the download progress of the file. When complete, double click on the download dialog and a WinZip Self-Extractor will open. Do Not Change the default settings in the Self-Extractor. Click the UnZip button. When extraction is complete, close the WinZip Self-Extractor.

The training manuals will be located at C:\Users\Public\cae\TrainingManuals on your computer. Using Windows Explorer, path to the location and open the training manual pdf. The training datasets have been placed in the folder locations provided in the manuals.

WSDOT CAE Environment Overview

WSDOT Training is available as information only.  WSDOT accepts no liability for its use or application. CAE support is available for WSDOT Employees and our consultant staff that are currently working on WSDOT projects.

Slow down on ice and snow.

It's easier to skid or lose control traveling at higher speeds. Give yourself more time to stop.

Carry chains, practice installing them.

Winter conditions could mean chains are required on your route. Practice putting them on your vehicle ahead of time.

Pack your winter car kit.

Carry extra supplies like warm clothing, ice scraper and brush, jumper cables and other emergency items.
