US 101 - Elwha River Bridge

Lake Crescent Highway Rehab Project

Description: The National Park Service & Federal Highway Administration will rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 around Lake Crescent and 4 miles of East Beach Road to address safety and long‐term maintenance issues.
Work schedule: 2018 work has resumed as scheduled below. The scope of work includes erosion control, sub-excavation, milling and paving beginning on the eastern end of Lake Crescent and working west. 

April 2018—Late May 2018
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic.
• Limited 4-hour delays may be scheduled (9am-1pm Mondays through Thursdays only) and will be announced in advance. Check Olympic National Park's webpage for updates.

After Memorial Day 2018—Labor Day 2018
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic.

After Labor Day 2018—Mid November 2018
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic.

Mid November 2018—Mid March 2019
• No construction. Temporary traffic signals removed.

March 15-31, 2019
• Expect half-hour delays during weekday work hours, with short delays after-hours to accommodate alternating single lane traffic.
• Limited 4-hour delays (9am-1pm Mondays through Thursdays only) and 6-hour overnight delays (10pm-4am Mondays through Wednesdays only) may be scheduled and will be announced in advance.

SR 112 - Olsen Creek in Vicinity of Vista Drive - Remove Fish Barrier

Description: Crews will remove two 6-foot diameter concrete pipes running under SR 12 at Strait of Juan de Fuca Highway and replace with a new fish passable structure.
Work Schedule: Late June through late fall 2018. Drivers should expect reduced speeds, one-way alternating traffic and occasional delays of us to 15 minutes through the work zone.

Work Schedule: For approximately six days between Monday, April 23 through Thursday, May 31 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

North Olympic Discovery Marathon

Description: Travelers will encounter a 15-minute total highway closure of US 101 for the race participants.
Event Schedule: 7:25 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. Sunday, June 3, 2018.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 8 - Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek - Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5

Description: The eastbound lanes have been reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic as crews replace outdated culverts under SR 8 to improve fish passage for Middle and East Fork Wildcat Creek.
Work Schedule: Around the clock traffic shift. Any closures will be announced. Work is scheduled through spring 2019.

  • Several times between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday, May 31, crews will intermittently stop traffic on SR 8 to place bridge girders over East Forks. This is the final of four girder deliveries in this project. Drivers can expect up to 15 minute delays.

US 12, US 101, SR 109, Aberdeen / Hoquiam Signals - Rebuild Signals

US 12, US 101, SR 109 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Multiple intersections (see below).

Description: Crews are building traffic signals, constructing sidewalks, ramps and widening the roadways in multiple locations in Aberdeen and Hoquiam. The project will be completed by fall 2018.
Work schedule: Daytime lane closures. Pedestrians will be detoured to avoid construction zones. Little to no impact to travelers and local businesses. Crews will work in multiple locations:

  • Emerson Avenue and Simpson Avenue
  • West Wishkah Street and Alder Street
  • Alder Street and Market Street
  • Alder Street and 1st Street
  • Park Street and Market Street
  • Heron Street and Park Street
  • East Heron Street and F Street.

US 12 - Unnamed Tributary to Wynoochee River - Remove Fish Barrier

Description: Crews will replace an undersized culvert under US 12 and install a new, larger culvert intended to improve fish passage and replicate a natural stream. WSDOT blog post.
Work Schedule: Mid-summer through fall 2018 construction. Drivers will encounter reduced speeds and one-lane in each direction around the clock through early fall. 

US 12/S of Sargent Blvd to Wynoochee River - Paving & Bridge Deck Repair

Description: Asphalt paving project to renew seven miles of US 12 from Aberdeen through Central Park. Crews will also make repairs to the driving surface of the Wynoochee River Bridge. This work kicks off one of two construction projects on US 12 this summer.
Work Schedule: Overnight paving operations began Monday, May 14.

  • Drivers will encounter nighttime, single lane closures each weeknight from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each following day.
  • Repairs to the Wynoochee River Bridge will occur mid-summer and require overnight, one-way alternating traffic.

US 101/N of Jct 109 to N of Ocean Beach Rd - Chip Seal

US 101 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 89.1 to 92.7

Description: This three mile pavement preservation project along US 101 begins with bridge deck repairs over the US 101 Bernard Creek Bridge south of Ocean Beach Road, followed by lane closures between US 101 and SR 109 to Ocean Beach road.
Work Schedule: Summer through early fall 2018 construction. Drivers will encounter weekday daytime construction with one-way alternating traffic through the work zone.

  • Beginning 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 30 through 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 1, drivers will encounter around-the-clock single-lane closures as construction crews remove asphalt and repair concrete over US 101 Bernard Creek Bridge south of Ocean Beach Road.
  • Paving resumes Monday, June 4, and last through Friday, June 8, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Crews will reduce northbound US 101 between SR 109 and Ocean Beach Road to a single alternating lane of traffic.
  • Finally, starting Thursday, June 28, motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures each weekday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through late summer as crews focus on paving the majority of the highway. No work will occur July 3 through July 5.

Description: Crews will intermittently lift the Riverside Bridge drawspan over a six-hour period to make mechanical repairs. Lifting the drawspan will close the bridge to traffic. Expect delays.

Description: Utility crews working for Grays Harbor Public Utilities will be relocating a buried power line near US 101 and Clearwater Road for less than one mile. Drivers will encounter one-way alternating traffic with flaggers and occasional shoulder closures as needed.
Work Schedule: Each Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. beginning Monday, May 21 through Thursday, June 7. No work on Memorial Day.

SR 20 - W of 4 Corners Rd to E of Water St - Paving and ADA Compliance

Description: This 6 mile paving project in Port Townsend will work from the ferry terminal to the southern end of the project west of 4 Corners Road by enhancing ride quality and installing 13 new ADA accessible ramps, which improves access for pedestrians and people with disabilities. Drivers traveling to Whidbey Island are encouraged to familiarize with the Port Townsend/Coupeville ferry schedule and plan ahead.
Work Schedule: Overnight single, lane closures each Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and occasional daytime delays as crews build ADA accessible ramps. Summer through early-fall construction.

CONSTRUCTION 

SR16 W of SE Burley Olalla Rd to Jct SR3 - Paving

Description: The project will repave a roughly 11.3-mile section of SR 16 between Gorst and Southeast Burley Olalla Road. The work will replace the left lane in both directions. Drivers can expect night lane closures and short-term ramp closures.

• Westbound SR 16 exit to SR 3 will close. 
• Bay Street (SR 166) on-ramp to westbound SR 16 will close.

Both will reopen at 5 a.m. each following day.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 102, WA ST Corrections Center St to US 101 - Chip Seal

Highway: Dayton Airport Road (SR 102) Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 0.01 to 2.9

Description: Crews will resurface the highway between US 101 and the Washington Correction Center.
Work Schedule: Construction is scheduled to begin after Memorial Day.
• One-way alternating traffic with a pilot car or flaggers during daylight hours. Work will mostly occur Mondays through Fridays. Weekend work may also be scheduled.
• Drivers can expect a reduced speed limit to 35 mph in the work zone.
• Depending on weather, work will continue through summer.

I-5 - M Street to Portland Avenue - HOV

Description: This project rebuilds Pacific Avenue and McKinley Way bridges spanning I-5. It builds a new northbound SR 7/I-705 bridge, and widens I-5 to accommodate northbound and southbound HOV lanes from M Street to the vicinity of the L Street bridge.

I-5 - SR 16 Realignment - HOV Structure and Connections

Description: This project is the final of a three stage effort to rebuild the Nalley Valley interchange. During the final phase, crews will build ramps that create new HOV lanes between I-5 and SR 16. The project will also realign I-5 to accommodate HOV ramps.

Wednesday, May 23

  • Eastbound SR 16 ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Thursday.

Thursday, May 24

  • Eastbound SR 16 ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday.
  • Eastbound SR 16 exit to Sprague Avenue will close from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Friday.

Lane closures:
During the week of May 21 travelers can expect overnight single and double lane closures in both directions of I-5 and SR 16 at the following locations:

  • Southbound I-5 between the Puyallup River Bridge and M Street each night Monday, May 21 through Thursday, May 24 starting as early as 8 p.m. All lanes will open by 6 a.m. each following day.
  • Northbound I-5 between L Street and the Puyallup River each night Monday through Thursday starting as early as 9 p.m. All lanes will open by 5 a.m. each following day.
  • Both directions of SR 16 between Union Ave. and I-5 from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 22.
  • Northbound I-5 from S. 48th Street to I-705 from 11 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, to 4 a.m. Thursday, May 24.

I-5 Mounts Rd to Center Dr - Auxiliary Lane Extension

I-5 Mounts Road Rail Bridge Repair

Description: Crews working for Sound Transit are making operational repairs to the rail bridge.
Work Schedule: Sound Transit will be testing a Sounder train on the section of tracks adjacent to I-5 between the Tacoma Dome and Nisqually. This activity is part of the ongoing implementation of positive train control (PTC) systems.
Be aware that even during normal operations, passenger and freight trains may be operating on the corridor at any time of the day or night, and at speeds up to 79 mph. Please remain clear of the tracks at all times. Signals should be obeyed at all train crossings.

I-5 Mounts Rd Vicinity VMS Install

SR 16, Union Ave to Jackson Ave. - ADA Ramps

Description: Crews will replace existing curb ramps and upgrade crosswalk signs.

2018 Pierce County Chip Seal
Highway: SR 702 & SR 7 Region: Olympic County: Pierce Location: Milepost(s) See below

Description: Contractor crews will chip seal sections of SR 7 and SR 702 this summer. SR 7 will be resurfaced between mileposts 25 to 36.5. SR 702 will be resurfaced between mileposts 0.5 to 9.3. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph in the workzone. Drivers will see alternating one-way traffic with a pilot car or flaggers. 
Work Schedule: Late spring through summer 2018. Work will take place during daylight hours, mainly Monday through Friday. Some weekend work may occur. Work is weather dependent.

SR 161 / 317th Street East LRI Waste Connections Project
Highway: SR 161 Region: Olympic County: Pierce Location: Milepost(s) 12 to 12.4

Description: Single lane alternating traffic on both directions of SR 161 near the Pierce County Landfill for the LRI Waste Connections project. Contractor is grinding, paving, striping and installing rumble strips. Drivers should expect delays.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday May 14-17.

SR 167, Milwaukee Ave to S of Pierce Co Line – Paving
Highway: 167 Region: Olympic County: Pierce Location: Milepost(s) 5.7 – 10.6

Description: Contractor crews are repairing bridge joints and repaving southbound SR 167 and its associated ramps. Drivers can expect overnight lane and ramp closures during the project. Extra law enforcement will be on site for increased speed limit enforcement.
Work Schedule: Work is expected to begin no later than June 18.


City of Tacoma Puyallup River Bridge Replacement

Description: City of Tacoma is closing the the 1927 Pacific Hwy Bridge that crosses the Puyallup River beginning May 21, 2018 through February 2019. During that time, the bridge will be removed and replaced.

I-5 - Port of Tacoma Interchange Improvement Project

Description: Graffiti removal on the northbound I-5 New York Ave overpass. Overnight drivers will see a left lane closure.
Work Schedule: 11 p.m. Sunday, May 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 21.

CONSTRUCTION 

I-5 - Martin Way Bridges - Special Repair

Description: Crews will replace aging and worn I-5 bridge expansion joints at Martin Way.
Work Schedule: See below.
• Night single- and double-lane closures will begin as early as 9 p.m. in both directions of I-5. All lanes will reopen no later than 5:30 a.m. weekdays.
• I-5 ramp closures will occur at Martin Way.

WSDOT will announce these closures as they are scheduled. This work is expected to be complete by mid-summer.


US 101, Olympic Region Guardrail and Cable Barrier

Swede Day Parade
Highway: US 12 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 41.8 to 42.8

Description: Total highway closure of US 12 as the parade route detours from Paulson St to Albany St, then south to Swede Hall in Rochester.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention - Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you - Most work zone accidents involve someone
  •  running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively - be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone. 
  • Don't use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
