I-405 Express Toll Lanes Between Bellevue and Lynnwood

The 15 miles of express toll lanes on I-405 between Lynnwood and Bellevue help keep traffic moving by providing a choice for a faster, more reliable trip when drivers need it most.

What are express toll lanes?

I-405 express toll lanes are free to carpoolers with a Flex Pass and also give other drivers the option to choose a more reliable trip by paying a toll.

Toll rates adjust depending on real-time traffic conditions to keep traffic moving. Signs tell you what you'll pay before you get in, and you lock in your toll rate when you enter.

If you don't have a Good To Go! account, you can still use the lanes. You'll be mailed a Pay By Mail bill at a $2 higher rate per toll.

To use express toll lanes toll-free from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, carpools will need to meet the HOV occupancy requirement and have a Good To Go! account with Flex Pass set to HOV mode.

We have three goals for the express toll lanes:

Goal #1: Provide a choice for drivers

Over 50,000 vehicles use the express toll lanes each weekday. Most people do not use them everyday, but like having this option when they really need it.

60 percent of I-405 drivers tell us they like having the option to use the express toll lanes. Learn more about this survey and what people are telling us.

Do you like having the option of using the express toll lanes for a faster trip?

Goal #2: Provide a faster and more predictable trip

The express toll lanes flow an average of 15-25 miles per hour faster than the regular lanes during the peak commute. Time savings add up pretty consistently when toll rates go up, so you'll usually save the most time when tolls are highest.

The regular lanes are also moving as fast or faster than they were prior to the express toll lanes, because there are now so many more cars flowing through the express toll lanes. Learn more about how express toll lanes help traffic in other lanes
Drivers going the full distance save 10-15 minutes on average at peak times.

Goal #3: Fund future improvements

Since opening, the express toll lanes have generated $25 for I-405 improvements. Learn more about where toll money goes.

Toll revenue funded the peak-use shoulder lane between SR 527 and I-5 in Lynnwood to improve northbound congestion, which opened to the public in April 2017.

Future plans
The long-term vision includes a 40-mile express toll lane system going from SR 167 at the Pierce/King County line to the I-405/I-5 interchange in Lynnwood. Learn more about the I-405 Corridor Program.
